The core components of a country
are its citizens. They continuously work together contributing in the progress
of the society and are themselves responsible for proper functioning of the
democracy. All the fundamentals rights and duties listed in the constitution
should be given utmost priorities in the day today life.
But in reality, people hardly
practice the most important tool at their disposal i.e. right to vote for
electing fair and responsible representatives. We always talk about high
inflation rates, corruption and scams which are terrorizing everybody
in the country but have we ever thought that what we can do at our own level to
fight these problems? Everyday a new scam is revealed, a new corruption story
finds the headlines of the newspaper and televisions news channels but we just
discuss these things for a while and then forget them. Today, we have
enough time to go to McDonalds, KFCs and PVRs but when it comes to cast the all
important vote, we have a very unjustified answer – ‘we don’t have enough time’
or ‘our vote won’t make a difference.’ Is that the end of our rights and
duties? Can’t we do something to correct it? Well of course we can. The
constitution has provided us with a right which comes into play as soon as we
reach the 18 year old mark i.e. the right to vote.
So do you have a voter ID card? If not then what all
steps have you taken in the direction to make one? Do you really cast your
vote? A responsible citizen is answerable to all these questions. If we really
want to bring a change around us then we should ourselves first become the
change.
